The hidden danger in forever
I remember when my daughter was born. I felt the tiredness would last forever.
I remember when I got pneumonia, I felt like I was going to be sick forever.
I remember when I broke my foot, I felt like I was going to be hobbling on crutches forever.
I remember how heartbroken I felt when my first love ended because I thought the love would last forever.
I remember how upset I felt when my first pet died because I thought it would live forever.
As soon as we feel like a temporary situation is going to last forever, we lose contact with ourselves and our aliveness. When we catch ourselves disappearing under the illusion of ‘foreverness’ it is useful to remind ourselves that now is all we have and to remember that most things in life are temporary.
